Day 6: Part 2

Day 6: Part 2

Yet again, I have been informed of some of the results before I even get to watch the event, even though I was watching the Olympics at the time that the sport should have been broadcast live.  I am pretty annoyed with you NBC.  I don't see what the big deal would have been to broadcast some things twice.  I feel like you could even show like half the coverage when it is live, and then do the more in-depth coverage during Primetime, but this method of just ignoring it when everyone else in the world is covering it is not working.  It is really spoiling some of the events for me.  Oh well, I guess that I can't even look at the internet during the day.  On to results.

The American men won their beach volleyball match today.

Shin A-Lam refuses to accept her special medal from the fencing governing body, saying that the only medal that she would accept would be an Olympic one.

In the Women's 200m Breaststroke semi-final, Rebecca Soni set a new World Record.

The Brazilians are accusing the London Olympics Committee of conspiring to sabotage them after the women's soccer team's bus broke down on the way to their match against Great Britain in London.

Hilariously, London mayor Boris Johnson gets stuck on a zip line because he doesn't have enough momentum to get to the end.  Whomp whomp.

Women's Beach Volleyball:  Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor dropped a set for the first time in their Olympic history, but they dominate the next two and win their match.  I love them!  I really hope they get the Gold again.

On to the medals!

Today's Medal Winning Events:

Men's Synchronized 3m Springboard: The dominant Chinese pick up yet another Gold in diving in this event with Yutong Luo and Kai Qin winning the medal.  The Russian pair Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov won the Silver, and American's Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais won the Bronze.  This was 32 year-old Dumais's fourth Olympics and his first medal, so a big congrats to him!

Men's 200m Breaststroke: Hungarian Daniel Gyurta won the Gold medal, Team GB picked up another medal with Michael Jamieson taking the Silver, and Japan's Ryo Tateishi won the Bronze.

Women's 200m Butterfly: The Chinese were expected to win this event and they did, but they didn't go 1-2 like expected.  Liuyang Jiao won the Gold, but Mireia Belmonta Garcia of Spain won the Silver, and Japan's Natsumi Hoshi won the Bronze.  The other Chinese swimmer came 8th.  Sadly, American Kathleen Hersey just came 4th.

Men's 100m Freestyle: Nathan Adrian of the US won this race but 1/100th of a second, The same amount that Michael Phelps won by in his incredible win in the 100 Fly in Bejing.  Australia's James Magnussen won the Silver and Canada's Brent Hayden won the Bronze.

Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay: Franklin, Schmitt, Vollmer, and Vreeland take on the Aussies and the French for this title.  And they win the Gold!!!! YAY!  The Aussies get the Gold and the French get the Bronze.

Men's Individual All-Around: John Orozco sadly makes a huge mistake on the pommel horse, which essentially eliminates him from the competition.  I am sad for him because in every interview he has done, he talks about how much he wanted to get to this level so that he could make a better life for his family.  He felt like he let them down after the Team Final and bet he feels like he let them down today.  I hope he realizes that he has done so much for his family and his wonderful personality and determined spirit will definitely open doors for him.  Sorry, just thought I had to say that.  But also, as soon as he did poorly on the pommel horse, they never showed him again in the broadcast.  He didn't medal, but he did move up to 8th place.  Again with the shoddy coverage. Now, the results.  After missing the dismount on his first rotation event, the pommel horse, Danell Leyva rallied on his best events, the parallel bars and the high bar, to win the Bronze medal.  Kohei Uchimura, the athlete involved in the controversy of the men's team event the other night, came away with Gold, and Germany's Marcel Nguyen won the Silver.  Also, I have not seen a single bit of the Men's Rings rotation, not in the Team Final or the All-Around. What's the deal NBC?  I am sick of this shoddy coverage.

Women's Pair Without Coxswain: BRITAIN'S FIRST GOLD!!  Heather Stanning and Helen Glover beat out a tough field to take the Gold medal and have the honor of having the home country's first Gold of these games.  The best part of this was the medal ceremony where the whole stand sung 'God Save the Queen'.  There must be no better feeling than winning a Gold at home with your compatriots cheering you on and celebrating your win. Australia's Sarah Tait and Kate Hornsey won the Silver and New Zealand's Rebecca Scown and Juliette Haigh won the Bronze.

Women's Quadruple Sculls Without Coxswain: Team Ukraine won the Gold, Germany got the Silver, and USA took home the Bronze.

Men's Eight With Coxswain: Germany won the Gold, Canada won the Silver, and Great Britain won the Bronze

Men's Individual Time Trials: Not to be outdone by the rowers, Brit Bradley Wiggins soundly beat the field and won the Gold in this event.  As one of the announcers said, 'He'll be knighted by the end of the week at this rate" and it's so true.  Germany's Tony Martin won the Silver. Team GB also picked up the Bronze from Christopher Froome's ride.

Women's Individual Time Trials: America's Kristin Armstrong won the Gold decisively in this event. Germany's Judith Arndt won the Silver and Russia's Olga Zabelinskaya won the Bronze.

Men's Kayak Single: Italy's Daniele Molmenti picks up the Gold, Czech Republic's Vavrinec Hradilek won the Silver, and Germany's Hannes Aigner won the Bronze.

Women's Individual Sabre:  In a huge upset, the US flag bearer in these Game and defending Olympic Champion Mariel Zagunis did not even medal in this event.  Korea's Jiyeon Kim won the Gold, Sofya Velikaya won the Silver, and Russia's Olga Kharlan beat Zagunis to pick up the Bronze.

Men's Individual Epee: Venezula picked up their first medal of these games with a Gold medal win for fencer Ruben Limardo Gascon. He defeated Norway's Bartosz Piasecki, who got the Silver.  Korea's Jinsun Jung won the Bronze.

Sooooo much Judo! and I haven't seen a minute of it.
Men's Middleweight: Dae-Name Song of Korea won the Gold, Asley Gonzalez of Cuba won the Silver, and Ilias Iliasdis of Greece won the Bronze.

Women's Middleweight: Lucie Decosse of France won the Gold, Kerstin Thiele of Germany won the Silver, and Yuri Alvear of Columbia won the Bronze.

Women's 25m Sport Pistol: Korea picked up another Gold with Jangmi Kim winning the Gold.  Ying Chen of China won the Silver, and Ukraine's Oleana Kostevych won the Bronze.

Women's Singles Final: China took 1-2 with Xiaoxia Li winning the Gold and Ning Ding winning the Silver.  Japan's Kasumi Ishikawa won the Bronze.

Women's 63-69 kg: North Korea's Jong Sim Rim wins the Gold, Romania's Roxana Daniela Cocos won the Silver, and Belarus's Maryna Shkermankova won the Bronze.

Men's 200m Backstroke: Tyler Clary and Ryan Lochte go for more hardware

Men's 200m Individual Medley: MARQUEE EVENT.  Showdown between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, oh yeah, and so other people, but really, they aren't going to win.

  1. Submit your resume to NBC so we can have some adequate and responsible coverage of the games, please.

I've found that if you really want to watch an event the best thing to do is to find when it is occurring live and watching the event online. It is a blessing to see how accessible these Games are in the digital era, if only the television broadcast options stood up to the task I'd be truly happy.

    1. Thank you for your comment! I would love to work at the Olympics one day. I finally figured out how to view the NBC online feed, but every major event I have tried to watch has been so glitchy. The constant buffering really makes a difference when the entire race takes place in the time its buffering. Ugh. Oh well.
