Day 11: Part 3

Day 11: Part 3

Ok, since I got through most of the interesting news of the day earlier, time to go right to today's medal line-up

Today's Medal Winning Events:
Women's Shot Put: Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus won the Gold in this event with a throw of 70' 7/8".  Valerie Adams of New Zealand won the Silver and Evgeniia Kolodko of Russia won the Bronze.

Men's 400m Hurdles: In a heartwarming story of dedication and redemption, Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic won the Gold after failing to make it to the final in Beijing. The morning of his 400m hurdle qualifier in Bejing, Sanchez was informed that his grandmother had died.  He was devastated and ran 3 seconds slower than his personal best.  Fast forward to four years later, Sanchez carries a picture of his grandmother under his jersey and after winning the race, kneels on the track to kiss that picture.  He showed his emotion during his medal ceremony, sobbing on the medals stand as his anthem played.  He dedicated his win to his grandmother.  Its hard to feel bad, then, that he beat two Americans to take the Gold.  He beat Michael Tinsley, who received the Silver and Javier Culson of Puerto Rico won the Bronze.  The favorite and two-time Gold medalist Angelo Taylor of USA finished 5th.

Men's 400m: Kirani James from Granada won the Gold in this race that had no Americans for the first time in many many years.  Kirani James has picked up Granada's very first Olympic medal, and it is Golden.  James was in the same semi-final with Oscar Pistorius and traded bib numbers with him after the race. He held Pistorius's bib number up to the crowd as he celebrated his win.  That was an act of true sportsmanship and I am glad that he won.  Karma, people, its all about Karma.  Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic won Silver and Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago won the Bronze.

Team Jumping: The Brits did what they do best on horses and won the Gold here.  The Netherlands won the Silver, and Saudi Arabia won the Bronze.

Men's Sprint: Jason Kenny picked up another Gold for Team GB, Gregory Bauge of France won Silver, and Shane Perkins of Australia won the Bronze.

Women's Laser Radial - One-Person Dinghy: Another Gold for China as Lijia Xu wins the event, Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands wins the Silver, and Evi Van Acker wins the Bronze.

Men's Laser - One-Person Dinghy: Tom Slingsby of Australia wins the Gold, Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus wins the Silver, and Rasmus Mygren of Sweden wins the Bronze.

Women's Uneven Bars: Gabby Douglas unfortunately had a major bobble on the bars and came in last place in this event final.  Aliya Mustafina won the Gold for Russia, Kexin He won the Silver for China, and 27 year-old Elizabeth Tweddle finally picked up a medal on this event with a Bronze.

Men's Rings: No Americans competed in this event. Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti of Brazil won this event over Chinese favorite Yibing Chen, who received the Silver.  Italy's Matteo Morandi picked up the Bronze.

Men's Horse Vault: Korea's Nak Seon Yang won the Gold medal, Russia's Denis Ablyazin won the Silver, and Igor Radivilov of Ukraine won the Bronze.

Men's 50m Free Rifle Three Positions: Niccolo Campriani of Italy won the Gold, Korea's Jonghyun Kim won the Silver, and USA's own Matthew Emmons picked up the Bronze.

Men's Trap (125 Targets): Croatia's Giovanni Cernogoraz won the Gold, Italy's Massino Fabbrizi won the Silver, and Fehaid Aldeehani of Kuwait won the Bronze.

Men's Greco-Roman 120 kg: Mijain Lopez Nunez of Cuba won the Gold over Heiki Nabi of Estonia, who won the Silver.  The Bronzes went to Riza Kayaalp of Turkey and Johan Euren of Sweden.
