Day 11: Part 2

Day 11: Part 2
OMG TEAM USA WOMEN!! BEST END OF A SOCCER MATCH EVER.  Alex Morgan scores in the 122nd minute just as overtime was about to end and send the match to a penalty shoot out with a header into the net.  USA beats Canada 4-3 after a very long physical match.  And now.........WORLD CUP REMATCH.  USA vs. Japan in the final!!!!!!

In other less happy news, American Nick Delpopolo who competes in Judo has been ejected from competition after testing positive for tetrahydrocannabinol, THC, aka the stuff they test for to check if you are smoking pot.  He claims that he inadvertently ingested the substance in baked goods that he didn't know were laced.  If this is true, then that sucks.  As Maggie Hendricks of Yahoonews says,
"OK, a little tip: Friends of Olympians. Sneaking pot brownies on a friend is never a good idea. But doing it when he's going to be competing in the Olympics, something he's worked for his entire life and that comes with a whole lot of drug testing, is downright terrible."
I suspect that this is not the real story, but that is probably just the cynic in me.

Women's Pole Vault: I was able to watch the end of this event live after some of the very shaky buffering through the 400m and the steeplechase.  The end looked terrible, with the athletes falling all over the place and looking like they were going to hurt themselves.  The American did not look like she was doing well, but I guess I really don't know anything because she still won Gold.  She still looked upset after falling on her final vaults and after the Cuban fell on hers, so I wasn't really sure who won until the announcers told us.  In the end, American Jennifer Suhr won the Gold, Cuban Yarisley Silva got the Silver, and defending champ Russian Elena Isinbaeva came away with the Bronze.

Women's 3000m Steeplechase: I was able to watch some of this as well, between the buffering, and got to see Russia's Yuliya Zaripova win the Gold, Tunisia's Habiba Ghribbi win the Silver, and Ethiopia's Sofia Assefa win the Bronze.  American Emma Coburn came in 9th place.

Synchro started yesterday with Duet Technical Prelims and today with the Duet Free Swim!!!! Synchro is still near and dear to my heart since I did it in high school.  It is awesome to watch if you are into that kind of thing! Unfortunately, Team USA did not qualify for the team finals, so we will only get to see a pair perform in the Duet competition.

Ok, that is all for now.  Back tonight with the rest of the results.
